What is Kyuki-Do?

Excerpts from the upcoming revised AKF Student Handbook

The concept of Kyuki-Do was first introduced to the United States by Grand Master Ok Hyung Kim in 1967. Kyuki-Do is a Martial Art that synthesizes the techniques of Tae Kwon Do, Judo, and Hapki Do. These three arts represent the core or foundation of Kyuki-Do. They are, however, not the only Martial Arts included in the Art of Kyuki-Do. Much like Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do, Kyuki-Do is constantly evolving, new techniques are added from different systems, and occasionally, old techniques are discarded.

In 1979 the American Kyuki-Do Federation was established by Grand Master Kim with the help of several devoted and sincere practitioners of the Martial Arts. The purpose of the Federation is to regulate and control Kyuki-Do as a Martial Art, and prevent unscrupulous individuals from taking advantage of it. The Art of Kyuki-Do has grown and expanded since and now includes techniques from Jujitsu, Karate, Boxing, Wrestling, Traditional weapons from Okinawa and the Philippines, and many others.

One of the main objectives of the AKF is to help people discover their full potential. Unlike many Martial Arts organizations that exist simply to serve themselves, the AKF is dedicated to helping its members and their schools.

Many people, both students of the Martial Arts and otherwise, have asked or wondered what Kyuki-Do is or what it implies. Kyuk literally means strike, ki is energy, and Do is Art, Way or Method. In Korean Kyuki literally means "spark or explosion.” The word Kyuki signifies the release or burst of energy that comes with successful execution of a technique. Although there are many different interpretations that can be heard from many different instructors, all will agree that Kyuki-Do is a Martial Art that combines many different arts into one and challenges the student to be the best person they can be.

Group Classes

Group classes feature self defense instruction, physical conditioning, various reaction drills, and training exercises designed to build the skills necessary for effective self defense. Enrolling in a group program allows you to attend a minimum of two regular sessions per week. Should you miss a class for any reason, you may make it up the following week or attend one of the special make up classes.

Private Lessons

Private lessons are available for the student who seeks a more accelerated and personalized training program. Private lessons can be scheduled at anytime you wish, based upon the instructor’s availability.
